Light Pupil Dilate are performing their FINAL SHOW at the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, July 30th.

We've played our blend of heavy psycho-dellic airy artsy rifftastic DIY hard rock with indie mathy hardcore tendencies for the last 9 years. We released the Neck Skin EP in 2001, our first LP Cascades in 2003, and our latest LP Snake Wine was released in the US on Oct 30th 2007 on Lifeforce Records, and in Europe in spring 2008. We are currently hard at work on our 3rd full-length TBA.

The Universe Divide will be performing first.

In 2007, Chris Rushing and Gaël Pirlot began a project with the intention of juxtaposing challenging compositions with melodic ideas; the result became The Universe Divide. The project became dormant as the two exhausted their hopes of finding a percussionist and began focusing on other musical endeavors (Canvas Solaris, The Burden of Existence). However, in 2009, a chance encounter with drummer Jason Parker revived the project and the quest for intergalactic entropy.

2010 has brought the trio out of rehearsal and onto multiple stages across Atlanta. The new 5 song E.P. produced by Jamie King at The Basement Recording is set to be released at the end of the 2010 Summer.

From the Rock underbelly of the Dirty South comes some of the most lip lickin’, hip shakin’ tunes to bitch slap the U.S. This trio will stuff your face with a musical feast then kick you in the gut to induce an instrumental vomiting that no one will want to clean up behind. Be aware that this trio is here to bring the Rock at all costs, this is not yo momma’s sittin’ on a chair, toe tappin’ jams that the kiddies are used to down at the Malt Shop - this is a get up and move like everyone is watching sexy Rock n’ damn Roll. So don’t hesitate to drop your pants and shake your boots till your souls are blown. ..

Qurious is the third act.

Qurious is not so much a band as it is a vessel. A vessel transports you into the dark far reaches of space and back, in an attempt to impart in their listeners a new-found, alien third-person perspective on the world and the infinite natural beauty that surrounds. Such a voyage is fueled through the production of ethereal musical landscapes constructed with hypnotizing vocal melodies, dance-inducing synthesizers, and found-samples gathered along the way. Your guides/abductors for this trek are a duo composed of one part singer/songwriter Catherine Quesenberry with a specialty in vocals, korg, and a secret weapon, and one part Mike Netland, engineer of samples, beats, and robo-phonetics. They’re coming to your planet, to your venues, to your homes. Their songs will draw you in like a sound-wave tractor beam. Don’t be scared though. They’re just Qurious.

Wowser Bowser is the second act of the show.

"'To the Pleasant Life!" intones Pettis, sounding like Bowser if he was actually Charles Foster Kane, and Mario was this plumber that reminded him of the solitary despondency of wealth. But then Mario becomes a charity project, invited to "kick it" and get on a train like it was before sunrise on a bucket list. Juxtaposed with the mdma bubbles they're embedded in it comes off like a spirit guide on the world of tomorrow ride at epcot, layering gurgling synths on top of what sounds like a keytar if it were actually a guitar shaped like a korg. Just don't call him twee, he might cry a tear in the shape of a K." -Discount Coupon

Altar Of Plagues are performing on Saturday, July 24th

Altar Of Plagues are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, July 24th.

ALTAR OF PLAGUES is an Irish black metal/post metal three piece consisting of members J. O' Ceallaigh (guitars, vocals, synth), D. Condon (bass, vocals) and B. English (percussion).

They play a very clean, yet dense atmospheric style of black metal, often with songs spanning past the ten minute mark. Like many other black metal groups, their lyrical matter is dominated by natural themes, and much like their American cohorts WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, their debut White Tomb is about the conservation of Earth, and their homeland of Ireland.

Altar of Plagues have released two EP's Through the Cracks in the Earth (2007), Sol (2008), and the critically acclaimed debut LP White tomb (2009). Fans of Ambient or Atmospheric black metal may enjoy this due to their lush texturing, and epic approach to songwriting, which may also appeal to fans of Post metal and sludge due to the repition of chord progressions, cleaner production, and the use of more sludgey style of vocals. Recommended to fans of both genres.

Thou are performing third.

"This is Louisiana.

It is not even the hottest part of the day and there is already a heat index of 108 degrees, it’s miserable. Right across the street from my house is a gun shop. I can hear someone shooting off a handgun behind it. We are well within the city limits and not one mile from the front gate of a military post. No one cares about the legality or the repercussions, if there are any at all. The giant pines behind my house only stay alive in this heat due to the massive amounts of moisture in the ground which heats up in the summer and never truly let you cool off. The populace is as apathetic as the nature is brutal. I am not sure if there is any other band out there that captures the sound of this unique state more than Thou. Eyehategod may capture Southern hatred and NOLA’s scummy underbelly, but Thou provides the soundtrack to an entire state that is rife with corruption and routinely beaten down by Mama Earth. Humans hurt her by spilling oil into her waters and she will inevitably kick our ass with a hurricane or two, and the ever-prolific Thou puts out another excellent release and plays on.

Summit is Thou’s third full-length, but they have about 20 or so releases when you include their splits, 7”s and one offs. This month is the three-year anniversary of their first tour demo. That’s 20 releases in three years. And not ONE bad release. I can’t say that about any other band. The amount of music they put out is staggering, but what is utterly stunning is the fact that they continue to progress. I remember hearing Thou for the first time. It was shortly after their first full-length, Tyrant, was released. I had been looking for a band like Burning Witch and had discovered Graves At Sea, and somehow I discovered Thou as well. I was floored. They had an incredible sound where they had created a monster out of doom and sludge and forced it to wade through the molasses thick mire of the swamps with a gun to its head.

This is Louisiana.

Then came the splits and eventually their second release, Peasant. Their sound continued to evolve, they never strayed from their punk rock DIY roots, they’ve never even signed to a label. Instead they work with about five. They never compromise. They continue on their way, doing their own thing. They put out splits with locals and bands they like. They tour when they can, and their shows are always amazing. The energy coming off of them, especially vocalist Bryan Funck, is the epitome of intensity.

Thou starts of this latest venture with an arpeggio that leads into…. blast beats. Seriously. Oh and the best part? They fit in perfectly. My jaw dropped and I actually said, “Oh man!” when I heard it. The song is called “By Endurance, We Conquer”, and it may now be my favorite song of theirs, replacing the perfectly titled “Their Hooves Carve Craters In The Earth” from the 2008 EP, Malfeasance – Retribution. It’s that good. The blast beat leads into that wall of guitars they are becoming famous for. Throughout the album there is a common sound of these haunting and beautiful melodies intertwined with this nasty sludgy chug.

The second song seems to set more of the theme though. The track is entitled “Grissecon”, and it draws up all these images of a brutal nature. I picture glaciers thawing and drowning cities spliced together with time lapse photography of vegetation taking over a decaying corpse until it is one with the ground. This leads into the perfectly titled “Prometheus”. As usual, we got pissed off at nature for keeping us in check and then here comes this demigod with the gift of fire and we go and scorch Mama Earth’s skin and kill her gifts of animals and vegetation. Sounds about right. Prometheus also has this really cool Neurosis-sounding riff throughout and a melody that sounds like it would fit in one of Earth’s more recent Ennio Morricone-sounding releases. This is followed with “Another World Is Inevitable” (which ties in well to my theories of nature vs. humanity) and it may be the most interesting song on the album. It starts off with this unique-sounding industrial death march, almost like it could be some weird type of dirge. Once again the nature imagery pops into my head, but this song is different. It’s about 10 minutes, and it’s this build up the whole time. Slowing down to recharge itself every couple minutes, but by the end it is a total eargasm of sound. Funck’s broken glass gargled with gasoline vocals blend seamlessly with the music as it grows more and more furious. I’ve seen Thou a handful of times and this is the song I really want to see performed. If the previous song is “Prometheus”, then this is the results from the fire that he brought. Of course another world is inevitable, this one just burnt to nothing. And damn, it’s beautiful.

The only song under eight minutes is “Summit Revisited”. It harkens back to “Reprise” from Thou’s split with Salome. It’s a beautiful instrumental piece that sounds like it was also written by Emily McWilliams. It would fit in perfectly with any orchestra and I really hope that Thou continues to include pieces like this in their music. This song introduces the final song on the album, “Voices In The Wilderness.” By now you’re senses are pretty worked, having only received a slight break with the instrumental piece. The song starts off a little odd, you know it’s building to something, and then it introduces this great stoned out doom riff. It sounds like a Southern classic rock riff in a weird way, but slowed down a bit, almost like if it was recorded to be played on wax at 45 rpm but instead it is getting played at 33; it’s pretty neat. This bleeds over into the end of the album which is just an acoustic guitar, a piano and humming. It slowly fades out and you’re just kind of left there with your thoughts.

They have raised the bar quite high for any other band out there doing this sort of sound and it is always interesting to see how Thou adds new elements such as pianos or blast beats and yet they seem like they were always meant to be there. You hear something new and it catches your attention, but never once do you wonder why they thought to put it in there. Truly a refreshing band that puts out excellent releases time and time again and has an excellent ethos about them." - Review of "Summit" by Luke Physioc

The Back Pockets make their Drunken Unicorn debut as the headliners.

"The Back Pockets are an extremely hard band to introduce. If I had to label them, I’d say “interactive gypsy punk-folk.” They’re like the Merry Pranksters but more eclectic. They have the power to adapt to context, forming their performances in real time and pulling it off with a cheerful cheekiness that sucks the crowd into their trippy world of wide-eyed wonderment. It’s probably dangerous. " -PERFORMER MAGAZINE

Thursday, July 22nd Child Bite is performing.

Child Bite is headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Thursday, July 22nd.

If Child Bite were a game of four-square, the contenders would be George Clinton, Frank Zappa, John Zorn and Ian MacKaye. With Jello Biafra, Eric Burdon and Mike Patton waiting to compete. The squares would be outlined with Dimebag Darrell’s bones, Kurt Cobain’s (surprisingly buoyant) head would be the ball, Henry Rollins would referee, the Melvins would cheerlead and the whole event would take place inside one of Sufjan Stevens’s better nightmares. That being said, this band will have my vote for artist of the year as long as years exist.

This year in particular, Child Bite toured extensively in support of last year's full-length Fantastic Gusts of Blood, playing exactly 100 shows. Their touring took them all over the country including a trek to Alaska where they competed in the World Beard and Mustache Championships. On Halloween they shocked an audience of 1100 at the Crofoot, headlining as Rage Against the Machine in what I believe to be the performance of the year. They found time to release a series of three split 7-inch records with Big Bear, This Moment in Black History and DD/MM/YYYY respectively. They recorded another full-length record with J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines) tentatively titled The Living Breathing Organ Summer which is now available.

"Hard-strummed banjo, and David Wingo, one of my favourite songwriters, singing. He strums and sings louder & louder, and yet it's not because of mere urgency, the wish to communicate that he cares. He has to yell because there is howling. He has to raise his voice over roars, whirlwinds, tides. This doom is murmured in creak & drone but it's also promised in Wingo's (marvelous) lyrics: We yelled our names over the noise, we saved the girls and drowned the boys. Sometimes you are yelling too loud to know if what you yell is a confession, a warning or a memorial." - Said The Gramophone review of "Donkey"

If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream -- and not make dreams your master; If you can think -- and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!" If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings -- nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -- Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And -- which is more -- you'll be a Man, my son!

Today The Moon, Tomorrow The Sun are performing on Saturday, July 17th

Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun is about the collaborative. It’s about the connections between sound and people. It’s about the heart and the head. It’s for mistakes and triumphs, and against arrogance and underconfidence. Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun is about sharing the ideas that are created by four friends in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s all for sharing much further than there, penniless or plentiful.

Stokeswood are performing second.

The electroacoustic band, Stokeswood was formed in 2004 by lead vocalist and acoustic guitar player, Adam Patterson and lead electric guitarist, Mark Godwin. The five-piece (since 2007), Atlanta based, indie rock band includes drummer, Jon Joiner, keys and bass player, Reed Irvine and percussionist, Craig Gendreau. Stokeswood makes modern electroacoustic music that moves the masses with pumping organic dance tunes and epic adventures. An eclectic mix of percussion, strong vocals, story telling lyrics, powerful electric guitar and driving synths Stokeswood's sound is described as a "Cosmic Waltz."

Stokeswood website

The 54 are opening.

The 54 grew from what was once an experimental acoustic project between classmates. In 2007, they set their sites on further developing an edgier sound that displayed what was becoming increasingly absent from the Rock scene: honesty, rawness, and showmanship.

At this point, only one thing was missing: a name. They experimented with several ideas: Chucks and Forces, StereoTip, Better than Sects... Nothing was striking a chord, until it came: The 54- with the new name came a new attitude, confidence, and a deeply rooted desire to transform their project into something that would one day be larger than life.

One of their undeniable strengths is their ability to merge different sounds with an explosiveness that inspires listeners to respond with the same uncontrollable, unapologetic impulsiveness. With lyrical content to expose the pre-historic definitions of fun, music, celebration, and honest human expression, The 54 shows signs of becoming the relatable rock band by which every other band claiming to be "of the people" must measure themselves. Having developed a cult-like following in Atlanta, the band has their eyes set on national and international ambitions. The 54 is soon to let the world know what they've been missing::::.

Backseat Dreamer is the second performer.

"Backseat Dreamer’s music is like Altered States with a happy ending—the experimentation with REM sleep and yearning for time travel is intact, just replace all the other-dimension animals and terrifying climactic face-warp with friendly leprechauns and a sparkly sunrise. The ambien-friendly solo project of South Carolina’s Sean Neuse, dude sounds like he wants to marry his synths, burying his own languorous vocals between beats and high-pitched chords like they’re fluffy pillows. His next album is called The Colors of Dreams, They’re in You." - Julianne Escobedo Shepherd / The Fader

The Fabric are opening.

"In fifty years, The Fabric's music could be generated by genetic algorithms, implanted neural nets and artificial intelligence. They could perform in high-resolution, full-immersion virtual reality and could project hypersonic auditory beams customized for each individual member of their audience. However, in today's terabyte age, The Fabric crafts songs from beating hearts and esoteric minds, manufactured through analog and digital synthesizers and laptop computers.

"We wanted to make a record that reflected the chaotic changes that are happening in the world today," says Joe Sikes, lead vocalist. The Atlanta-based trio's sophomore effort, We Operate Machinery, is a 15-song opus about love and humanity in the age of technological advancement. We Operate Machinery is an evolutionary leap from The Fabric's first effort in 2007, Man vs. Prototype. "The first album was a throwback. It was an ode to electronic bands and influences like Depeche Mode and Massive Attack," says producer/programmer Sharaab. "We had just begun working together, but with time we developed an original voice."

The song Tragedy, the first single on We Operate Machinery, exemplifies this fusion of experience and technique. It uses the sound of a crashing hard drive to capture the lamentations of a disintegrating relationship. The concept of data loss as heartbreak also is reflected in songs such as Release, Best Intentions and the album's emotional centerpiece, Meaningless.

Other tracks on We Operate Machinery address the rapid progress of technology. The proto-industrial Songs of The Sun describes how ancient cultures employed tools to manipulate their world. Can't Stop and Lunar Influence theorize how modern society relies on technology to survive. Meanwhile, the electro-disco Frozen Lake prophesizes a dystopian future where technology becomes our master instead of our servant.

While contemporaries twiddle knobs and stare white-facedly at their laptop screens, The Fabric seizes the attention of its audience with theatrical displays uncustomary of its genre. Lovers of electronic music rarely have seen a stage presence like this. A vibrant vocalist, Sikes belts lyrics into the mic and writhes across the stage. Meanwhile, Sharaab and keyboardist Jeremy Frank, behind their bank of synthesizers, drum machines and laptops, provide their own undulating rhythms. The splattering, colorful array of video projected imagery onto the three band members is what transforms an ordinary performance into a truly evocative event."
